Where Is Home?

You know, I miss Portland. And it's not just because I live in a pokey little college town in the middle of nowhere. Or maybe that's why.

I mean, the Palouse is beautiful. The sky here is so BIG. I'd forgotten how much I missed sky until I came back to Idaho and could really stretch myself beneath it. And the rolling hills here are so sensually feminine, I sometimes ache with the beauty of the landscape. Plus, you can see the stars at night, another thing I hadn't really thought about missing until I got out of the car one night in December and looked up.

But there's no water here. I miss the river. I miss the bridges. A friend emailed me today to say he'd done the Bridge Pedal, and I remembered the times I'd driven across the Sellwood. And then I thought about Sellwood itself. And Westmoreland. And performances at Reed. And the chili burgers at the White Eagle and the food at YaHalla and Kun Pic's. And those unexpected, breathaking views of Mt. Hood or the Freemont that take you by surprise in the unlikeliest places. And the Japanese gardens. And the whole community of friends I left behind there.

I think I miss those things all the more because I'm not going back to Portland. I mean, sure, I'll visit. But it's not going to be home for me again. A big piece of who I am came from there, though. And I think I left part of it behind when we decided to sell the house.

I hope I can find home again. It's not here, however home-like we are making this place. And I'm not cut out to be a nomad.

Pah. Ya Halla... Kun Pic... How about freaking Red Robin? Goddamn Red Robin! Is that so damn much to ask? I don't think so. Let me tell you all a little story. A new restaraunt opened in town. It's a pretty good restaraunt. So, you want to know what the talk of the town here has been for the last two weeks? The new restaraunt. "Have you tried the new restaraunt?" "What did you think of the new restaraunt?" "Did you see the lines at the new restaraunt?" The best part is that no one even mentions the name. It's just "the new restaraunt" (maybe it should be capitalized.) Anyway... Pah. I say it again. Pah.

I didn't know you officially moved to Moscow? What made you do that?

I have been extremely busy myself so I can't blame you for being neglagent in sending emails. I have been pretty bad myself. I am understudying Paquette in Candide with Light Opera Works this summer. I am working full time at my office this summer. I am throwing parties for friends who are moving. I am trying to set up Student Orientation for grad school, I am on the student council. I am taking voice lessons and trying to readjust my vocal technique AGAIN! I am sending out resumes for auditions. I am seeing someone from my cast, he's my age and a hoot to hang out with. A pretty good kisser too. I have to say that my puckering for singing is happening much better.

I have a condolense card for you. I am sorry to hear about your cat. Where can I send it?

I think if you often and think, Oh, I need to find out what Sally is doing, but then I have to rush to do something and I don't do it. Give Dave a big HOWDY for me and "love the hair"

Rebecca
