And Another Thing...

I have just been notified that I am one of the 2004-2005 Graduate Student Association Teaching Excellence Award recipients. I'm feeling rather proud of myself. Think I'll ask Dave if we can have a celebratory dinner in Spoke-Vegas tonight.

Damn straight you should have a celebratory dinner. I want to be a teacher eventually but it's not easy work. A lot of it seems to be preparation, which is a sport for the meticulous, and then there's being able to execute things, and relate to students, and all the rest, which can't all be taught. So congratulations. You should feel very proud.

Why thank you. It is hard work, tremendously so. I am more tired after teaching a class than I am after a performance. (Though several of my colleagues and I have discussed the fact that teaching is, in many ways, like doing standup comedy.) But I love seeing my students figure things out. I love seeing them succeed and surprise themselves in doing so. It's the very best part of teaching, if you ask me.

Did you go? Where did you go? Go.

We went to the Outback where the bartender was horrible because I sent back a glass of wine. I'd love to get some suggestions for *good* restaurants in the area that aren't chains. It's one of the things I miss most when I think of Portland. Good food.
