I Did Not Watch the Oscars

No!

The Hell you say!

'S true. I did not watch them. And though I'm sorry I missed some of the outfits and "hairstyles" (I did indeed hear about the freshly cueballed Jack Nicholson), I had no desire to watch them this year. I've seen hardly any movies, so I felt curiously detached from the whole thing. Plus, I'll be able to find pix of the best outfits online.

I do not feel remotely cheated. It's actually pretty refreshing to not care.

I blogged it live, and it was a really long suck of my time this weekend. There were some good moments, but it went on forever.

I didn't see even ONE of the movies nominated in ANY catagory. It would have been a stupid waste had I bothered to watch. I did look the dresses up the next day online and I heard that the documentaries nominated might be good so I think I will hunt those down. Otherwise, Hollywood has lost me. I prefer reading.

It is refreshing to not care :)

Helen Mirren is sexy and fantastic and gracious and intelligent and I want to be her when I grow up. She's had the most amazing life. She did theatre in Africa with Peter Brooke where they'd arrive at a village, unroll a carpet and put on a performance. Amazing stuff.

But I haven't seen a movie in forever.

And I'm so glad I chose to do other things with those four hours of my life. Because nobody seems to think it was worth it. Maybe viewer numbers are dropping because the pageantry isn't worth the formulaic "I have to thank anybody who might have something to do with my career later" speeches, the mindnumbing "entertainment" portions and the apparent lack of surprises.

Maybe viewership is dropping because movies aren't as interesting any more. I do want to see the Queen, and The Departed and Pan's Labyrinth, and maybe King of Scotland (though I don't know if I can handle the violence), but I really don't care about most of the films. And it sounds like much of the rest of the world is in the same place.

Or maybe it's dropping because by the time we get to the Oscars, there have been so many award ceremonies that nobody cares about that anymore.

Perhaps the entertainment industry needs to get out more, look around and see what the rest of the world is doing. It may just be too self-referential to mean anything to many of us any more. Like an inside joke that's become so warped through constant reference that it makes no sense anyone outside the sacred circle that started it.
