Taylor Mali: What Do Teachers Really Make?

Well, the teacher and slam poet in the above video made me cry...

Oh Sally, it made me cry, too, and I'm not a teacher by profession. But I'm a mother, and we teach as well. I even homeschooled each of my two kids, along with a teacher/advisor for a year.
I don't even have the words to speak about this video... And people expect so much of our teachers, way beyond the call of duty, too.
Here's to you, Sally, and all the other dedicated men and women who do what you do!! THANK YOU!!

I must confess, I cannot teach high school. Or anything below college age, really. I do not have the necessary patience. I love teaching college freshmen. I love watching them figure it out, love watching them discover who they really are, what it means to be an adult.

But I have to be able to say, "You messed up? Well maybe next time you should actually listen to me. I don't stand up here speaking in order to admire the sound of my own voice." I need to be able to hold them completely accountable for themselves without coddling, which I don't feel I can do with high school students. I can't just let a 16 year-old sink or swim. I'm more than willing to help, if asked, but I can't hold their hands through the entire process.

I have unvoiceable amounts of admiration for the people who do possess that kind of patience, the teachers in elementary and secondary ed. I could not do it. I'd go mad.
