PhotoHunt: Old Fashioned
A couple of years ago, I discovered the joy of writing with fountain pens. When I work with one of these babies I don't have to press nearly as tightly as I do with a traditional ballpoint. Which means that since I've taken to using them, my penmanship has improved, I can write forever without getting a cramp, and I can write faster. But they're pretty old fashioned. (Though some fountain pens can be very high-tech.)
I've also begun binding my own journals. I couldn't find any for purchase that had the kind of paper I like writing on best (and if I don't have good paper, I don't write; the feel of it is an important part of the aesthetic for me), so I started making my own. The paper is handmade (not by me, it takes long enough to bind the book, thank you, I'm not making the paper as well), the books are handmade--and pretty rough-looking, which is how I like them. They look homemade. But all-in-all, writing on hand cut, handmade paper in a hand bound book with a fountain pen is pretty much not the most modern way to record your thoughts.
So.
Old-Fashioned.

I love it that pens and paper are important to you. I am the same way. I don't use fountain pens any more because I am a lefty and I always smeared my words. I also think journals are becoming a bit old fashioned because of computers. I still like the feel of the paper and a place to have my writing written down.

I am much more compelled to write in a paper journal than to keep an electronic diary. Which sounds silly as a comment on my own blog. But there's something so much more personal about connecting to paper. I can write all my secrets down and no one will know.

Your journals look beautiful, and you've inspired me to dig out my fountain pen and clean it up for use now!

Ummmm, I love foutain pens! I am however no good at keeping them refilled and ready to use. Pilot used to sell a good, inexpensive fountain pen, and I used one through most of grad school.

Sarah, thank you. Happy to help you rediscover something you love.
Heather, I use cartridges. So much easier to deal with than bottled ink, given that I tend to do most of my writing not at my desk. Or in my office even. It's just easier to carry a ziploc bag with full and empty cartridges than to haul around a bottle of ink. And I'm much less likely to get it all over me.
