Self-Portrait with Eye Shadow

Show's open. Two more performances. I received a high compliment this evening, when one of my students remarked to my TA, "I forgot it was Sally!" Bless, bless, bless Maaike for passing that on. What a lovely thing to hear.

I thought I'd share a bit of the ridiculousness with you. You'll have to excuse the blur, I'm tired and decided to give up on the photography aspect of things. Given the action of the play, you also don't get to see my fancy big Texas updo either. Which is kind of sad. It's quite the hair. However, you can still see the makeup. Which is what matters. Just remember that my character makes a living as a Civil War reenactor and then revel in the full glory of my eyelids.

Thank you, Courtney, what a sweet thing to say.

The real vividness of the greens isn't as obvious in the photo as I'd like it to be. One of the costumers said re: the makeup, "You look like a mermaid!" Which is fine. Were I playing a mermaid. Personally, I think I look more like a drag queen. But given that one of the lines another character says about me includes the phrase "wearing too much eye makeup," it's entirely appropriate for the show.

I am amazed how you balance all this... what play are you performing?

It's a brand new play called "The Woods of Weaver." Wednesday night was the world premiere. It's fun, playing a character no one has ever played before.

I wish I could say I balance all of it, but frankly, I have way too much on my plate right now. This afternoon I have to tell a director that I cannot work on his project. I don't have the time or the energy. The grading is piling up and my body is telling me I need to slow down. Next year should be a different story, since I'm supposed to teach fewer classes, but for right now I've already got enough going on.
