Happy 40th Birthday, Sesame Street
From one of your earliest viewers.
True story: Joan Ganz Cooney, the creator of Sesame Street, was my great aunt's first student teacher. They stayed in touch. So at barely two, I was in front of the television for the first episode of Sesame Street on November 10, 1969.
I've watched it a bit since, especially when visiting my nephew. I have to say, I miss the grittiness and the urban sensibility they seem to have toned down over time. But it's still an awesome show. After all, without Sesame Street, we wouldn't have Put Down the Ducky.

Personally, I liked Billy Joel singing "Just the Way You Are." Too bad he probably won't be a guest again...the kids don't know him and he had a few too many personal issues that landed him in the Top 10 Celebs on Sesame Street Who Were Abusers Boozers & Losers. http://www.tvtango.com/news/detail/id/114

But what kids who were watching in 1988 knew who Jeremy Irons was? Or John Candy? Or Ladysmith Black Mambazo? Sesame Street was put together to be enjoyable for adults too. At least, that's how it began. In fact, in the mid-late 1980's, 2 of every 5 Sesame Street viewing households had no children in them.
I read that in a TV Guide of the era.

I got to know Sesame Street from watching it when my kids were little. Even after they got too old for it, I'd tune in now and then. Haven't seen it in many years now, but I'm awfully glad it's still around.
